Gerard Howland appeared in WIRED magazine’s list of the twenty entertainment industry members most likely to shape its future. His solo accomplishments as a British theatrical and entertainment designer, costume designer, writer, producer, composer, and illustrator have generated over two hundred stage productions, fifty operas, and numerous television, film, and themed entertainment attractions worldwide. His clients include WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING, UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, FOX STUDIOS, WARNER BROTHERS, HBO, WDR, SWF, SAN FRANCISCO OPERA, LA OPERA, CHICAGO LYRIC OPERA, HOUSTON OPERA, OPERA NORTH, The ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, The CHICHESTER FESTIVAL, The BUXTON FESTIVAL, The AMERICAN CONSERVATORY THEATRE, SCR, The ROLLING STONES, MICHAEL JACKSON, Paul Allen’s EMP, SFX, The OLYMPICS, The WORLD EXPO 2000 & 2010, The SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS & DUBAI PARKS & RESORTS. Mr. Howland was, for seven years, the director of design at the SAN FRANCISCO OPERA, where he has created more new productions than any stage designer in its illustrious history. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the IAAPA award for The Titanic Experience (a FOX STUDIOS theme park attraction in Sydney, Australia, for show concept, production design, and scripting), several Drama-Logue awards, and Most Noteworthy Experimental Film at the WORLDWIDE SHORT FILM FESTIVAL in Toronto. Mr. Howland founded THE FLOATING COMPANY, an attraction design/production company, and the AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, a company dedicated to developing FilmTheatre. He was recently the senior creative director of UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, designing their new park, Epic Universe, and illustrating their first comic book, Darkmoor. Dr. Macropolus is Mr. Howland’s first graphic novel series, accompanied by the film song cycle, The Circus of Dr. Macropolus.
